Angel Marcloid, the Chicago-based musician and visual artist best known as Fire-Toolz, uses the project name Nonlocal Forecast for her instrumental explorations inspired by fusion jazz, prog rock, and new age. Releases such as 2020′s Holographic Universe(s?)! are meant to evoke memories of the smooth, pleasant background music heard during Weather Channel forecasts, but with more elaborate, virtuosic arrangements.
A longtime fixture of the American experimental noise scene, Marcloid started to receive more widespread attention and acclaim when she began releasing music as Fire-Toolz during the mid-2010s. Albums such as 2017′s Drip Mental were intense, confrontational collages of myriad styles, juxtaposing the extremities of black metal, cybergrind, and electro-industrial with soothing textures drawn from smooth jazz and vaporwave. In 2019, she launched her Nonlocal Forecast moniker with the Hausu Mountain-issued full-length Bubble Universe!, which expanded on the softer, less imposing elements of Fire-Toolz, yet still contained intricate arrangements and remained boundlessly eclectic. Triangular Reformat, a lengthy, remix-heavy collection of both Fire-Toolz and Nonlocal Forecast material, was digitally self-released later in the year. Second Nonlocal Forecast album Holographic Universe(s?)! appeared in 2020, containing guest appearances by avant-garde saxophonist Bhob Rainey and fusion musician Kyle Jameson. ~ Paul Simpson
