Dance music producer, remixer, and DJ Pierre-Alexandre Busson, known foremost as Yuksek, has evolved his sound from club-minded electro-house to an increasingly song-based fusion of pop, indie, and disco, additionally branching into film scores. Following several EPs and remixes for artists like Chromeo, Klaxons, and M83, he made his full-length debut with the buzzy Away from the Sea in 2009, shifting to a much more polished dance-pop sound with 2011 follow-up Living on the Edge of Time. He subsequently remixed or collaborated with Katy Perry, Lana Del Rey, Bertrand Burgalat, and countless others.
Busson studied piano at a conservatory for several years prior to recording as DJ Pea and joining a series of bands, including the electro-pop, new wave-inspired Klanguage. The Reims, France native went by Yuksek as early as 2002, when he initiated a series of minimal house EPs for Hypnotic Music presented by Fafa Monteco. Additional 12″ releases for Hypnotek, Rise, Relish, and I'm a Cliché, along with remixes of tracks by Chromeo, Teenage Bad Girl, and Birdy Nam Nam, preceded the first Yuksek album, 2009′s Away from the Sea, released on Barclay. Over the course of the next few years, Busson added a sizable batch of remixes to his discography, including ones for the Prodigy’s “Invaders Must Die,” Moby’s “Mistake,” and Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi.”
Second studio album Living on the Edge of Time, released on Barclay in 2011, offered a tightly concentrated set of Busson’s most melodic, song-oriented material. Meanwhile, the producer continued to release non-album singles and EPs, such as the first release for his Partyfine label, subsequently a home for releases by Black Yaya and Peter & the Magician (the latter a duo consisting of Busson and Aeroplane’s Stephen Fasano). By early 2015, Busson’s discography had swollen with remixes of Katy Perry’s “Peacock,” Empire of the Sun’s “DNA,” and Lana Del Rey’s “Brooklyn Baby.” He also wrote the music for the Cannes-featured film Marguerite and Julien (2015). His own song “Sweet Addiction” hit the Top 40 in France in 2016, and his third full-length, Nous Horizon, arrived on Partyfine in early 2017. It featured guests such as Her, Monika, and Juveniles, and was followed by remix collection Nous Horizon, Pt. 2 shortly afterward. Yuksek’s Do Beijo EP was released in 2019, including a remix of his Bertrand Burgalat collaboration, “Icare.” ~ Andy Kellman
