Truth Club’s songs fall somewhere between chilly post-punk and spacious, nerved-out indie rock. Hailing from Raleigh, North Carolina, the band made a strong critical impression with their 2019 debut album, Not an Exit. After moving from the regional Tiny Engines label to New York-based Double Double Whammy, they delivered their follow-up, Running from the Chase, in 2023. Truth Club was formed by longtime friends Travis Harrington (vocals, guitar) and Elise Jaffe (drums) who enlisted bassist Kameron Vann to play their first show in 2017. Before they even had a record out, the band had already notched a national tour. During sessions for what would become their debut LP, guitarist Yvonne Chazal came into the picture, and by the time Truth Club signed with Tiny Engines, they were a quartet. Released in May 2019, Not an Exit introduced the group’s lean, wiry sound, centered around Harrington’s anxious, introspective songwriting. Critics took note, and the album made several year-end lists. Over the next few years, Truth Club endured the lockdown period of the pandemic and continued to evolve as a unit, writing and arranging more collaboratively. They played shows with acknowledged heroes like Protomartyr and Duster, and became even more enmeshed in the regional Carolinas scene. Recording in Asheville with Alex Farrar, they completed their follow-up album, Running from the Chase. The band found a home with Double Double Whammy, and the label issued the stand-alone single “It’s Time” in early 2023. Running from the Chase was released in October of that year and featured a guest spot from fellow North Carolinian Indigo De Souza. ~ Timothy Monger
