Floridian duo They Hate Change make party-friendly music incorporating atmospheric breakbeats and Dirty South rhyme cadences, with influences ranging from drum’n’bass and grime to post-punk and indie rock. Consisting of producers, rappers, and all-around music enthusiasts Dre and Vonne, the pair began self-issuing music during the early 2010s, then received increased attention with 2018′s Now, and Never Again, their second release on Deathbomb Arc. THC’s Jagjaguwar debut, Finally, New, appeared in 2022. Dre (Andre Gainey) and Vonne (John Harrison) both lived in the same apartment complex as teens. The two had been scouring the Internet for music since childhood, with numerous regional variants on hip-hop and bass music capturing their interest, as well as British genres such as drum’n’bass and grime, and rock styles from Krautrock to emo. The Tampa Bay duo started releasing music as They Hate Change (and occasionally Retail Therapy) in 2012, and their album Cycles appeared on Deathbomb Arc, known for releases by genre-busting hip-hop acts like clipping. and JPEGMAFIA, in 2015. The instrumental EP Meters surfaced in 2017, and the full-length Now, and Never Again was released in 2018, shortly followed by a deluxe edition of Cycles. A trio of EPs appeared in 2019: Clearwater, Juices Run Clear, and Maneuvers. The heavily drum’n’bass-influenced 666 Central Ave. was issued by Godmode in 2020. THC signed to Jagjaguwar in 2021, issuing the single “Faux Leather.” The full-length Finally, New arrived in 2022, in advance of the duo’s tour with post-punk band Shame. ~ Paul Simpson
