Formed in London around the turn of the millennium by singer and guitarist Dan Black, bassist Matt Fisher, and drummer Trevor Sharpe, the Servant (their name taken from a 1963 Joseph Losey film) released their first “mini album,” the six-song Mathematics, later that year. After lead guitarist Chris Burrows joined, the band set on recording its second “mini album,” With the Invisible, which also came out in 2000. In 2003 the Servant’s self-titled full-length was released, and their combination of dark, theatrical rock and sometimes quirky guitar pop won them fans not only in their native Britain but also in other European countries, specifically France and Italy. The U.S. was first introduced to the band vis-à-vis the inclusion of an instrumental version of one of their songs, “Cells,” on the trailer for the 2005 film Sin City, and in 2006 the Servant’s second record, How to Destroy a Relationship, hit French, Italian, and Swiss shelves, with later plans for release elsewhere. ~ Marisa Brown
