Italian producer, DJ, and audio engineer Nino Pedone produces abrasive, industrial-influenced experimental techno under the name Shapednoise. Pedone began producing music while studying audio engineering in Milan, and his first tracks were released digitally by Pfirter’s MindTrip Music in 2010. After moving to Berlin in 2011, he started a label called Repitch Recordings with Ascion and D. Carbone, and the trio began releasing 12″ records of their spacy, tension-filled minimal techno tracks. Shapednoise’s Features, Vol. 2 EP appeared on the label in early 2012, and System Procedure was released by Key Records Vinyl around the same time. Pedone formed industrial techno duo Violetshaped with Violet Poison (Francesco Baudazzi), releasing 12″ EP The Great Mother Down the Stairs on the latter’s eponymous label in 2012, with a full-length double LP following in 2013. That same year, Shapednoise released two full-lengths that took his sound in more abstract, noisy directions: the Day of Refuge cassette on Hospital Productions (run by Dominick Fernow, aka Prurient and Vatican Shadow) and the Until Human Voices Wake Us LP on Opal Tapes. In 2014, Shapednoise released an untitled 12″ EP on Russian Torrent Versions (a secret sublabel of Ron Morelli’s L.I.E.S.), and remixed Stroboscopic Artefacts founder Lucy as well as experimental French guitarist Franck Vigroux, whose Centaur EP was the debut release on Repitch sublabel Cosmo Rhythmatic. The following year, Shapednoise collaborated with Black Rain (an experimental industrial project of Stuart Argabright, formerly of no wave pioneers Ike Yard) on a 12″ EP titled Apophis, also released on Cosmo Rhythmatic. Pedone collaborated with Logos and Mumdance on a project called the Sprawl that was inspired by science fiction writer William Gibson. The trio’s E.P. 1 was released by Boomkat imprint the Death of Rave in November of 2015. The following month, John Twells’ experimental label Type released Shapednoise’s third full-length, Different Selves. Featuring a guest appearance by Godflesh’s Justin Broadrick, the album was Pedone’s harshest, most experimental work to date. The EP Deafening Chaos Serenity followed in late 2016. ~ Paul Simpson
