Combining elements of indie rock and alternative dance music, Sego make lyrics-forward music that’s both freewheeling and anxious. After establishing a sound that’s parts dance-pop and post-punk on their debut EP, Wicket Youth, in 2014, they leaned more heavily into indie rock for second album Sego Sucks in 2019. Over the next few years, they collaborated with Big Black Delta (2020′s “Into the Night”), issued a 17-minute song (2020′s “Life with Pam”), and opted for a seductive alt-pop-rap for “TANDANG” in 2023.
Originally from Provo, Utah, singer/songwriter Spencer Petersen (a onetime music major at BYU) and drummer Thomas Carroll moved from Provo to Los Angeles as members of indie rock group Eyes Lips Eyes. Peterson eventually began writing music on his own and, partnering with Carroll, recorded Sego’s debut EP, the alternative dance-rock-oriented Wicket Youth. It arrived on Kitsuné Music in 2014. The duo then signed with Dine Alone, which issued their second EP, Long Long Way from the Fringe, the following year. Sego’s danceable debut album, Once Was Lost Now Just Hanging Around, followed on Dine Alone and Raygun Records (U.K.) in 2016. The band self-released Hanging Around Remixes later the same year and toured in support of OK Go in 2017.
While preparing their second full-length, Peterson and Carroll added Alyssa Davey (bass) and Brandon McBride (guitar/keyboards) to the lineup. Still stylistically varied but sporting a grittier rock presence, their quartet debut, Sego Sucks, appeared on Roll Call Records/House Arrest in 2019. A collaboration with Big Black Delta, “Into the Night,” saw release in January 2020.
With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, multi-instrumentalist Kathleen Frewin joined the band in place of McBride, and the adjusted lineup issued the 17-minute “Life with Pam” in October 2020. As venues began reopening, they resumed touring and began work on a full-length with producer Nate Pyfer (Kaskade, the Moth & the Flame). The first fruits of these sessions, the playful, indie rap-fashioned “TANDANG,” arrived in March 2023. ~ Marcy Donelson
