From the tough, dubbed-out techno of 2012′s Thrive to the acid-drenched, underground, pounding stomp of 2019′s EP The Eyes, Regal has carved himself a path to being one of the techno scene’s brightest stars, holding down DJ residencies across Europe as well as remixing the likes of Nina Kravitz and Charlotte de Witte.
Italian-born, Spain-based Gabriel Cassina (aka Regal) first found himself DJ’ing at large clubs in Madrid at the age of 19, playing a mix of deep underground techno with elements of dubstep and drum’n’bass. Using the alias Gabryel Casse, Cassina originally released his debut EP in 2010 before issuing a slew of singles under the name — for labels such as Technomafia, TMR, and Naked Lunch — over the next two years. In 2012 he founded his own label, Involve, and released his debut as Regal. Taking inspiration from the European underground as well as the likes of Emmanuel Top and Hardfloor, Regal started to utilize the 303 in most of his productions, creating tracks that perfectly summed up the heady sound of the underground techno scene. With a steady supply of releases over the next few years, including collaborations with the likes of Len Faki and Amelie Lens, Regal continued to DJ across Europe, making a name for himself with his acid-soaked sets. By 2019 he had teamed up with Alien Rain on the 303-bashing Acid Affair EP, which started to see him bringing tougher, harder sounds to his palette. That same year also saw him debut on Bpitch Control with the release of The Eyes, an EP that looked back to the hard trance and distorted techno sound of the early ’90s. ~ Rich Wilson
