Los Angeles-based beatmaker and songwriter Mr. Carmack produces introspective, downtempo hip-hop and R&B as well as more aggressive, bass-heavy material. First emerging during the early 2010s with a series of self-released albums and EPs, his work quickly caught the attention of trap and EDM fans, and his material appeared on labels like Mad Decent and All Trap Music. He’s produced tracks for rappers such as Isaiah Rashad, Talib Kweli, and Busdriver, and has shared the stage with the likes of Hudson Mohawke, Cashmere Cat, and Diplo. His first vocal-based LP, Viista, appeared in 2019. Carmack is a part of jazzy hip-hop trio the Jefferson Park Boys with Kenny Segal and Mike Parvizi, and makes hybrid club music with PromNite as Project Paradis, who released their first two EPs in 2020.
Aaron Carmack was born and raised in San Francisco, and briefly attended college in Long Beach before moving to Oahu, Hawaii, for a few years. Primarily making his income from digital sales of his music, he released several EPs and full-lengths beginning in 2011, including Frozen, which leaned towards house and drum’n’bass, and the instrumental hip-hop album Melodies, Vol. 1. The single “Birth Control” appeared on Mad Decent imprint Jeffree's in 2013, and Carmack worked with producers and rappers including Mikos da Gawd, Mike Gao, Isaiah Rashad, and Watsky. His album Dimebag was released by Lightsleepers in 2014, and Rekindling, a split release with Djemba Djemba, came out in 2016. Tuesday Wednesday Thursday, an EP with Tennyson that featured a guest appearance by BJ the Chicago Kid, appeared in 2017.
The Jefferson Park Boys, Carmack’s trio with Kenny Segal and Mike Parvizi, released their debut LP, Casual Horns, Dog, in 2018. After issuing numerous EPs and singles throughout 2019, Carmack released the alternative R&B album Viista at the end of the year, with guests including Kehlani, Drew Banga, and Bobby Saint. The Jefferson Park Boys produced Purple Moonlight Pages, the acclaimed 2020 full-length by R.A.P. Ferreira (formerly known as Milo), and Carmack collaborated with PromNite as Project Paradis, releasing Paradis 1 and Paradis 2 on Mad Decent. On the same label, Carmack collaborated with Aluna on the track “Whistle” from her debut solo full-length, Renaissance. ~ Paul Simpson
