About this artist

Mare was originally founded as a metalcore band under the name One Less Lie in 1999. The band recorded a full-length CD album in the summer of 1999 titled "" and began playing shows. In the summer of 2000, the band changed name to Mare and recorded their second release, a self-titled EP, "", released on CD-Rs. But the band was soon put on hold while members pursued other projects; Tyler Semrick-Palmateer went to The End (4) while Paul Dunning went to The Abandoned Hearts Club.

Mare reformed in 2002, after Tyler quit The End, with a slightly altered line-up, and eventually recorded their third release, another self-titled CD-R EP in the summer of 2003 (not currently listed on Discogs). But the band was unhappy with the recording of this third release and they decided to completely re-recorded it at a different studio. The re-recorded version served as the band's fourth release, "", put out by the band on CD-Rs in the fall of 2003. It was this fourth release which was eventually re-released by Hydra Head Records on CD an entire year later in October 2004, "", and gained the band notability. This same release was also re-released by Translation Loss Records on vinyl and Daymare Recordings on CD in Japan.

Mare covered Melvins's "Nightgoat" for the tribute album "" in 2005. Several pre-production recording sessions took place in 2006 for Mare's planned fifth release (and second release on Hydra Head Records). The release was nearly completed; nevertheless, the band felt tremendous pressure to follow-up with better material and ultimately disbanded in 2007 citing "lack of motivation to write and record more material for the project.” The recordings of this unfinished album quickly found their way to file-sharing programs but the band (not wanting to contradict its reason for breaking up) later dismissed them as mere demos.

The band has since reunited several times; first in 2009 for a single show in Ontario; then in 2012 for three shows in Ontario; again in 2015 for a Canadian/American mini-tour; in 2016 for a single Canadian show and a European tour that got cancelled; and most recently in 2017 for a single Canadian show followed by a full European tour.
