An atmospheric indie band based in Sydney, Australia, Mansionair rode a wave of hotly tipped singles to streaming success and a label deal in the mid-2010s. Smooth, synth-leaning pop songs like “Easier” and the ODESZA collaboration “Line of Sight” introduced them to a wider audience in advance of their 2019 full-length debut, Shadowboxer.
Mansionair got together in 2014 when producers/multi-instrumentalists Lachlan Bostock and Alex Nicholls met with local vocalist Jack Froggatt to work on some unfinished song sketches. The chemistry between the three was immediate and they quickly began building on their early sessions. It wasn’t long before Mansionair was picked up by Glassnote Records and touring in support of larger bands like Alt-J and Chvrches. The band issued a series of singles, gaining more traction with each new release. Their 2017 single “Easier” stood out; streamed millions of times, it gained the band new followers at a dizzying rate. That same year, they collaborated with ODESZA and WYNNE on the single “Line of Sight,” which earned a Grammy Award nomination. In March 2018 the band relocated to the United States and issued the singles “Violet City,” “Technicolour,” and “Falling.” Recording between Sydney and a rustic cabin in California, Mansionair completed work on their full-length debut, Shadowboxer, which appeared in March 2019 and peaked at number 37 on the Australian pop chart. “Guillotine,” a collaboration with NoMBe, arrived the following year. ~ Fred Thomas
