Briefly known as the mysterious, sunglasses-obscured Gulddreng until his identity was revealed in 2017, Malte Ebert became a pop star in his native Denmark, issuing a dozen Top Ten hits under the moniker in 2016 and 2017 before retiring the name. With an agile, soulful voice, he continued to chart after releasing “Rather Be” as Malte Ebert in mid-2018. Born Malte Fynboe Manniche Ebert in Vejle, Denmark in 1994, Ebert formed the electro-pop duo We Don’t Know with Frederik Meyer in his late teens. They released the EP Nothing But Sound in mid-2014. Ebert then signed with Universal, which helped devise the Gulddreng character. Beginning with his debut single “Model,” he racked up tens of millions of streams; “Model,” “Se Mig Nu,” and “Hva Så” were consecutive number ones. Gulddreng had four more number one songs — “Drikker for Lidt,” “Nemt,” “Ked af Det,” and the Christmas song “Guld Jul” — all in 2016. That year, he won the audience award at the 2016 Danish Music Awards. He continued to release singles, including the Top Five hits “Utro,” “Lyvesangen,” and “Ensom,” in 2017. The project’s sole album, Farvel, followed in early 2018 and went to number four. He performed his final concert as Gulddreng on February 2, 2018. In June of 2018, Ebert released his first single under his own name. The change was welcomed by fans, and “Rather Be” became a Danish Top Three hit. The dance-pop tune “All the Time” followed that August as he attempted to expand his reach with English-language songs. ~ Marcy Donelson
