Malcolm Todd’s warm songs combine a fluid alternative R&B sound with the emotional outlook of an indie singer/songwriter. The son of TV producer/writer Tim Hobert (ABC’s The Middle), Todd began making music during the pandemic and released his first EP, Demos Before Prom, in 2022. A second EP, Shower Shoes, followed in 2023 and singles such as “Art House” and especially the viral break-up song “Roommates” garnered attention online. In 2024, he released two more EPs, which were then combined and expanded into his first album Sweet Boy. Los Angeles-born Malcolm “Todd” Hobert’s first encounter with the entertainment industry was through his father Tim Hobert, who worked as a producer and writer on shows like Spin City, Scrubs, Community, and The Middle. Young Malcolm appeared as a baseball player on an episode of the latter show in 2012 and later turned up as an extra on an episode of The PET Squad Files in 2015 but didn’t further pursue acting. Instead, he started creating music during the pandemic, developing an emotional, warm indie R&B sound in the vein of artists like Steve Lacy or Tyler the Creator. Todd released his first six-track EP Demos Before Prom in May 2022, followed by another six-track EP, Shower Shoes, in March 2023. The single “Art House” became popular online, which led to Todd’s breakthrough with the song “Roommates” in June 2023 — the story of a relationship unraveling, the tune became a viral hit and paved the way for more singles like “Mr. Incorrect” and “4Me 4Me.” In February 2024, Todd released the first five songs of his Sweet Boy album as an EP, followed by five more in March. The full 16-track album, which also featured several of his previously released singles, appeared in April 2024. ~ Christian Genzel
