Canadian musician Hannah Georgas’ warm, vulnerable voice and gently quirky, melodic songwriting style navigate the spaces between melancholy indie rock and brighter, anthemic adult pop. She emerged with her debut album, This Is Good, in 2010, and was nominated for Songwriter of the Year at the Juno Awards for both the debut and her second full-length, 2012′s Hannah Georgas. With Georgas also singing backup for his band, the National’s Aaron Dessner produced her fourth studio long-player, 2020′s All That Emotion. Still balancing lush, rousing pop/rock and intimacy, the self-produced I’d Be Lying if I Said I Didn’t Care followed in 2023.
Born and raised in Newmarket, Ontario, Georgas played in a band with Tim Oxford, later of Arkells, during high school before relocating to British Columbia to attend the University of Victoria. She worked on music while at school, releasing her first EP, The Beat Stuff, on Ontario label Hidden Pony in 2009. Her full-length debut, This Is Good, followed on the same label in 2010 and was soon long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize. It also made Georgas a Juno Award nominee, when she was recognized in the categories of best new artist and songwriter of the year. In the meantime, some of her songs were placed in television series including Defying Gravity and Degrassi: The Next Generation as well is in major advertising campaigns.
After signing with Dine Alone, Georgas presented her self-titled second album in 2012. It collected two more Juno nominations, this time for songwriter and alternative album of the year. She followed it with tours in support of City and Colour and Sara Bareilles. Named for her grandmother, her Dine Alone follow-up, For Evelyn, saw release in June 2016.
After writing and demo’ing songs at her home in Toronto, Georgas started recording her fourth album in mid-2018 at sessions in upstate New York with Aaron Dessner. While continuing work on the full-length, she released a covers EP, Imprints, in conjunction with International Women’s Day 2019. It included appearances by Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, the Weather Station’s Tamara Lindeman, and singer Emily King. She toured that year as backing vocalist for the National and the completed All That Emotion arrived on Dessner’s Brassland imprint and Arts & Crafts in September of 2020. The affiliated EPs All That Emotion Versions (featuring the National’s Matt Berninger, This Is the Kit’s Kate Stables, and others) and All That Emotion: Acoustic followed in 2021.
Georgas took on the role of lead producer for the first time on her next album, the more personally candid, musically striding I’d Be Lying if I Said I Didn’t Care. Featuring instrumentalists like James McAlister (Sufjan Stevens, Ester Drang) and Gabe Wax (the War on Drugs, Soccer Mommy), support from co-producer Sean Sroka (Ten Kills the Pack), and an array of analog recording equipment, it arrived on Lucy Rose’s Real Kind Records and Arts & Crafts in August 2023. ~ Marcy Donelson
