About this artist

Gully Bop, born Robert Lee Malcolm, is a dancehall deejay who recorded as Country Man in the 1980s. He rose from homelessness to fame in 2014, after some some seemingly off-the-cuff performances were recorded and uploaded to social media platforms. Shrewd producers snatched the a cappella material and applied it to backing tracks. By the end of the year, the Kingston native had a handful of official Gully Bop releases to his credit, and expanded his fan base with a confrontational set at his island’s Sting Festival. In 2016, as his ascent continued — with the likes of “Pussy Specialist” and “My God Dem Nuh Bad Like Me” among his most popular cuts — Malcolm was arrested on charges of domestic abuse and robbery filed by manager and collaborator A’mari. The charges were eventually dropped as Malcolm continued his career with singles like “Secret Lover” and “Jamaica Nice,” and a slew of collaborations. ~ Andy Kellman
