Highly influential Memphis rapper Gangsta Boo started off as a prominent figure in underground rap circles but soon took command of more mainstream audiences as well. She was a member of the legendary Three 6 Mafia as early as their 1995 debut Mystic Stylez, and was making solo albums by 1998 with her Billboard-charting debut Enquiring Minds. As the years went on, Gangsta Boo appeared on tracks alongside OutKast, Eminem, Gucci Mane, Run the Jewels, and many of hip-hop’s biggest names. Her fearlessness, charisma, and raw talent had an effect on rap in general, but especially paved the way for other female rappers who followed. Gangsta Boo died in 2023 while working on new album The BooPrint.
Gangsta Boo was born Lola Chantrelle Mitchell in Memphis, Tennessee, and was rapping by age 14. At age 16, she joined Three 6 Mafia when the group was still in their infancy, and would contribute to their albums from 1995 until leaving in 2001 to focus on her solo output. Her 1998 debut Enquiring Minds featured contributions from many of her Three 6 cohort, however, as did its 2001 follow-up Both Worlds *69. Both of the first two albums performed well and made the Billboard Top 200, and 2003′s Enquiring Minds II: The Soap Opera did well commercially. By that time, Gangsta Boo’s reputation as a strong force of Memphis rap had been well established, and she spent much of the 2000s and 2010s appearing as a featured guest on other artists’ tracks. In addition to these frequent features and sporadically released mixtapes, she teamed up with longtime friend La Chat for the 2014 project Witch. Gangsta Boo remained active into the 2020s, releasing multiple singles and appearing on songs like 2022′s “Big Momma” with Hannah Monds and the group track “FTCU” with Latto and GloRilla. Gangsta Boo died on January 1st, 2023 at the age of 43. At the time of her death she was working on new music. ~ TiVo Staff
