Full of Hell are an American power-violence band whose sound ranges from blistering grindcore to brutal sludge metal, with ventures into experimental noise. Based in central Pennsylvania and Ocean City, Maryland, the group issued their debut album, Roots of Earth Are Consuming My Home, in 2011. They continued to spread sonic malevolence on subsequent efforts like Trumpeting Ecstasy (2013) and Garden of Burning Apparitions (2021), and on collaborations with like-minded decibel pushers Merzbow and the Body.
The group was founded in 2009 by Dylan Walker (vocals, electronics), Spencer Hazard (guitar), David Bland (drums), and Brandon Brown (vocals, bass). Their first release was 2010′s sludge-leaning The Inevitable Fear of Existence 7″ EP on Get This Right Records. The same label released the group’s split EP with German band Goldust in early 2011. Full of Hell showcased their experimental side with the cassette FOH Noise, which became the first volume in a series. Full-length debut Roots of Earth Are Consuming My Home appeared on A389 Recordings in August 2011. More noise cassettes and split 7″s followed, including releases with Code Orange Kids, the Guilt Øf…, and Calm the Fire.
Full of Hell’s second album, Rudiments of Mutilation, was released by A389 Recordings in 2013. The group’s profile expanded when they collaborated with Japanese noise legend Merzbow on a full-length album in 2014, released by Canadian metal label Profound Lore Records. In 2015, Brown left the group and Sam DiGristine became their new bassist. The 7″ EP Amber Mote in the Black Vault, including a cover of the Melvins’ “Oven,” was issued by Bad Teeth Recordings in early 2016. In March of the same year, a collaborative EP by Full of Hell and the Body titled One Day You Will Ache Like I Ache was released by Neurot Recordings.
The group’s next studio long-player, Trumpeting Ecstacy, arrived in May 2017 and was issued by Profound Lore. Ascending a Mountain of Heavy Light, a second collaboration with the Body, was released by Thrill Jockey later in the year. After announcing a deal with Relapse Records in 2018, Full of Hell reunited with Kurt Ballou (Converge), who had produced their previous album and recorded 2019′s Weeping Choir. The band delivered an unrelenting amalgam of hardcore, grind, and death metal on their fifth full-length outing, 2021′s Garden of Burning Apparitions. The brief EP Aurora Leaking from an Open Wound appeared in 2022. ~ Paul Simpson
