A gritty Memphis rapper who honed his streetwise rhymes in the late 2010s alongside contemporaries Moneybagg Yo and Blac Youngsta, Finesse2tymes rose to prominence with the 2019 mixtape Hustle & Flow. After the completion of a prison sentence, he returned with a vengeance in 2022, signing with the Mob Ties label and delivering his Billboard-charting mixtape 90 Days, which received a deluxe edition in 2023.
Born Ricky Hampton, Finesse was raised on Memphis’ East Side and struggled with the law from a young age. Following his first prison sentence at age 14, he began rapping about his own journey, delivering tough tracks alongside friends like Moneybagg Yo and Blac Youngsta, with whom he formed the collective Memphis Greatest Underrated. In 2019, while he was serving a sentence on a federal weapons charge, the collective released a self-titled EP. That year also saw the release of several solo projects, including the mixtapes Hustle & Flow and Goin' Straight In. Finesse continued to write and forge industry connections even while imprisoned, and by the time he was released in early 2022, he’d been offered a contract by Mob Ties CEO J Prince Jr.
Working quickly, he collaborated with Moneybagg Yo on “Black Visa,” DaBaby on “Luv N Hip-Hop,” and Gucci Mane on “Gucci Flow.” Even more successful were solo singles like “Get Even” and “Back End.” Some of these tracks appeared on the 90 Days mixtape, released in December of 2022. 90 Days also included appearances by Tay Keith and Lil Baby and debuted at number 57 in its first week on the Billboard 200 chart. 90 Days Later — a deluxe version of the mixtape that added six new tracks and features from Kevin Gates, 2 Chainz, and Nardo Wick — appeared the following year. ~ Timothy Monger
