Connie Constance is an English singer/songwriter whose output doesn’t adhere to one genre and has the disparate comparisons — to the likes of Lily Allen, King Krule, and Hiatus Kaiyote — to prove it. She released her early 2015-2016 recordings on Black Acre, a label that enabled her to develop her hybrid of contemporary indie pop and soul-rooted alternative R&B. She made her 2019 full-length debut on Universal subsidiary AMF with English Rose, and since then has established her own label, Jump the Fence, with EPs such as the 2021 offering Prim & Propa. Second full length album Miss Power arrived in 2022.
A native of Watford, Hertfordshire, Connie Constance (born Constance Power) studied ballet and musical theater before she concentrated on music. Although she was absorbed by a great variety of music as a youngster, and drawn most to indie bands during her teen years ranging from the Stone Roses to Arctic Monkeys, she felt predestined as a woman of color to make commercial R&B. Unfulfilled after writing tens of songs conforming to a specific genre, Connie resolved to make music that more accurately reflected herself and defied simple classification. She found a home at Black Acre (slogan: “Genre? There is no genre”), the outlet for the three-song In the Grass EP and the single “Answer,” both of which were recorded with label mate Blue Daisy and released in 2015.
Connie then struck a deal with Universal boutique division AMF. During the next two years, she took small steps toward her first album with an array of singles epitomized by “Let Go,” a collaboration with Ben Baptie and Alfa Mist. The ballad was later among the highlights of English Rose, Connie’s full-length debut. The March 2019 release included additional input from the likes of Jim Abbiss, Luke Gomm, and Dave Okumu, and led with the title track, a Jam cover. Connie then went independent and in 2020 launched Jump the Fence with a batch of singles and The Butterfly Club, a five-track EP. Prim & Propa, another EP, followed in 2021. In 2022, second full-length Miss Power was released on Belgian label Play It Again Sam, offering a new chapter of Constance’s songs of empowerment and self-actualization. ~ Andy Kellman
