Washington, D.C.’s Capital Kings are a Christian duo known for their dynamic, electronic-based, dance-oriented pop. DJ, producer, and rapper Cole Walowac and producer-singer Jon White rose to success in the front half of the 2010s, releasing two albums on the Gotee label and sending clubby singles like “Fireblazin” and “Into Your Arms” to the top of the Christian chart. When Dylan Housewright took over on vocals, the group landed one more hit with 2016′s “I Can’t Quit” before disbanding in 2018. Walowac and White reunited as Capital Kings in 2023 and released “Higher” featuring Evvie McKinney and Jesse Francis.
Life-long friends, the musicians met in a church nursery and started playing music together as kids. They gained notice in 2012 with a series of remixes for fellow Christian artists tobyMac (including “ShowStopper” and “Me Without You”), Britt Nicole (“Amazing Life”), Mandisa (“Good Morning”), and Group 1 Crew (“His Kind of Love”). By the end of that year, they released an EP, I Feel So Alive, and also made two contributions to the Gotee label’s Christmas compilation ’Tis the Season to Be Gotee Too. Their self-titled debut album followed in January 2013 and entered Billboard’s Top Christian Albums chart at number five.
In 2015, Capital Kings returned with their sophomore album, II, which featured appearances from singer Chris Tomlin, as well as rappers KB and tobyMac. As with their debut, the album fared well, peaking at number 12 on the Billboard Christian Albums chart and reaching number three on the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
By 2016, White had left the group and was replaced by singer Dylan Housewright. Housewright made his recorded debut on the non-album single “I Can’t Quit,” which also featured a guest appearance by rapper Reconcile. Additional singles like “Love Is on Our Side” and “Don’t Wanna Wake Up” appeared in 2017, but despite this the second iteration of Capital Kings never quite took off and they disbanded in April of the following year. Housewright, after his brief tenure in the band, focused on his family while Walowac signed a production deal with Warner Chappell and spent several years working under the name Saint X.
In 2023, the original duo of Walowac and White re-formed Capital Kings and released their first music together in seven years. They began this new era with “Higher,” a pulsing club track that featured guests Evvie McKinney and Jesse Francis. ~ Andy Kellman
