Rapper Emeka Akumefule (aka Blaqbonez) self-proclaims to be the greatest rapper in Nigeria, a statement he makes to encourage others to match his dense lyricism and catchy beats.
Born in 1996 in the Imo state of Southeastern Nigeria, he grew up involved in both Yoruba and Urhobo culture, partly due to his mother, who was a pastor. He began rapping at age 13, much to the disapproval of his parents. In order to satisfy both parties, he left to study computer engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University whilst simultaneously taking part in underground rap battles. He would go on to win Terry Tha Rapman’s Zombie competition in 2012, surpassing over 3,000 other rappers. Afterwards, he appeared on a Terry Tha Rapman mixtape, 2012′s World Domination, appearing alongside Olamide, Vector, Mode 9, and Spellz. After he had released three separate projects — Hip-Hop in Blaq, Unfinished EP, and Cassette Tapes and TVs — he proclaimed to be the greatest rapper in Nigeria, a statement that he claims was meant to make other rappers up their game and rise to the challenge. This ideology continued into his 2018 EP, Bad Boy Blaq, which was part of a trio of releases designed by Chocolate City Records to challenge and inspire other rappers. His debut album, 2021′s Sex Over Love, featured a plethora of guest artists, including Amaare, Nasty C, and Bad Boy Timz. Another album emerged the following year, titled Young Preacher. ~ Liam Martin
