About this artist

The solo moniker of Matteo Milleri from the acclaimed techno/ambient duo Tale of Us, Anyma produces intricate, melodic techno and progressive house, connecting music with the world of digital art. A series of EPs and immersive multimedia concerts preceded the project’s debut album, 2023′s Genesys, a conceptual work about a digital being named Eva. The album featured appearances by Grimes, Sevdaliza, and CamelPhat, and was followed in 2024 by Genesys II, a double album split between original material and remixes of songs from the previous volume. Born in New York but based in Italy from a young age, Matteo Milleri met Carmine Conte while studying sound engineering at the SAE Institute in Milan. They formed Tale of Us in 2008 and relocated to Berlin the following year. While Milleri released several minimal techno singles and EPs under his own name, Tale of Us took off thanks to their adventurous DJ sets and restrained yet highly emotive tracks on labels like Visionquest, Life and Death, and Minus. They founded the Afterlife label in 2016, and released the piano-heavy ambient album Endless on classical institution Deutsche Grammophon in 2017. While Tale of Us have remained active as DJs and performers, regularly hosting Afterlife events and appearing at festivals including Coachella, Tomorrowland, and Movement, Milleri has been focusing his creative energies on his Anyma project. He used the name for a remix of Moby’s 2020 single “My Only Love” (featuring Mindy Jones), then issued debut EP Sentient on Afterlife in June of 2021. Claire was issued by Rose Avenue the following month, and its title track was accompanied by the first full-size, full-definition NFT music video. Anyma collaborated with Amelie Lens on the ten-minute ambient techno track “Lightning Over Heaven.” Another Anyma single, “Running,” appeared later in the year. Anyma and Chris Avantgarde teamed up for the 2022 progressive house single “Consciousness,” which received a popular remix by Eric Prydz. Anyma’s debut full-length, Genesys, arrived in 2023, co-released by Afterlife and Interscope. Accompanied by audiovisual concerts and NFT artworks, the album told the story of a humanoid character named Eva, following a theme of human-machine interaction. In addition to “Consciousness” and another Chris Avantgarde collaboration, “Eternity,” Grimes guested on “Welcome to the Opera,” and other singers and producers such as Sevdaliza, Rebüke, and CamelPhat made contributions. Genesys II followed in 2024, including collaborations with Argy, PARISI, Karin Park, and others, as well as remixes of Genesys tracks by artists including Daniel Avery, Kobosil, and Kölsch. ~ Paul Simpson
