Though she had played piano as a child, and had started experimenting with writing bedroom pop songs using production software as a teenager, she got heavily into electronic music during the initial COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, as she realized that it could be listened to at home instead of a club. After producing over 150 songs, she started uploading music to SoundCloud using the name yunè pinku. She recorded sessions with U.K. dance producer Joy Orbison, and contributed a guest mix to his BBC Radio 1 residency in 2021. She also released a song with Logic1000 titled “What You Like.” Her first solo single, “Laylo,” followed, and the debut EP Bluff arrived in April 2022. She remixed Charli xcx’s “Used to Know Me” and Biig Piig’s “FUN,” while yeule and Kin Leonn remixed pinku’s song “Bluff.” The stand-alone single “Jaws” surfaced in September, and her second EP, Babylon IX, arrived in 2023, earning praise from Pitchfork and NME. Later that year, pinku appeared on the Hot Chip song “Fire of Mercy,” covered the Cranberries’ “Dreams,” and released the single “Killing Bee.” Her third EP, Scarlet Lamb, was issued in 2024; pinku was additionally featured on Cecile Believe’s song “Spark.” ~ Paul Simpson
