About this artist

Houston native West Munroe, born Christopher Sommer, was familiar with the guitar from an early age. Growing up in a musical family it was something he always messed around with but didn't take seriously. After the death of his younger brother he began to go deeper into his musical journey, starting with the guitar. Early on his influences with the guitar were the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, John Mayer, Eric Gales, and Gary Clark Jr. A couple years after taking the guitar seriously he discovered a performing arts school in his city named HSPVA. Musicians like Robert Glasper, Chris Dave, Bryan Michael Cox, and even Beyoncé attended this school. After his guitar audition, he was declined acceptance. However, two weeks later the school would change their mind and let him into the Jazz Department. During his time at the school he faced many challenges musically. He would force himself to play and practice four hours a day minimum. His junior year of high-school he got a Maschine by Native Instruments and began to experiment with beat-making, sampling, and recording music. He would continue to get better and hone his craft. After high-school he attended Berklee College of Music for a brief 18 months. In this time he would begin producing, writing, and performing songs of his own. He returned to Houston in the beginning of 2017 and left again in 2018.

Now residing in Los Angeles, West Munroe is a self-described Abstract Artist.
