Making atmospheric EDM that’s often eerie and uplifting at once and with an emotional arc reflected in accompanying music videos, the Blaze went viral with their first video single, “Virile,” in 2016. Their full-length debut, DANCEHALL, followed in 2018. They were welcomed at some of the world’s top music festivals before returning to the studio for audio-video singles such as 2022′s “DREAMER.”
Based in Paris, France, the Blaze is a duo formed by cousins Guillaume and Jonathan Alric. The project began when Jonathan was enrolled in film school in Brussels and asked Guillaume, who was making electronic music under the moniker Mayd Hubb, to help with music for a video he was shooting. Their debut single, “Virile,” emerged in early 2016 as part of the Bromance Records compilation Homieland, Vol. 2. Featuring unearthly, pitched-down vocals, its companion video garnered over a million views by the arrival of their first EP, Territory, in the first half of 2017. It was released by Animal 63. The Blaze returned a year later with the single — and video — “Heaven” in early 2018. The track appeared on the duo’s first full-length DANCEHALL, which arrived in September that year, also on Animal 63. Meanwhile, the group performed at festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Pitchfork Paris, and Reading and Leeds Festivals.
The Blaze’s first new music since the release of their debut album, “Somewhere,” featuring French-born U.K. rapper Octavian, appeared in January 2020. Following a pandemic-forced hiatus, they re-emerged with singles and videos including “EYES” and “DREAMER” in 2022. ~ Marcy Donelson
