The project of singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Justin Osborne, SUSTO’s uplifting alternative country-rock took shape in Charleston, South Carolina. After making their recording debut in 2014, SUSTO’s sophomore LP, 2017′s & I'm Fine Today, landed on Billboard’s Independent and Heatseekers album charts. They ushered in the next decade with more of their warm, spirited brand of rock on 2021′s Time in the Sun and 2023′s My Entire Life, both of which were released by New West.
Originally featuring Osborne and a revolving lineup, SUSTO formed in 2013, taking its name from a trauma-related syndrome associated with Central American cultures. With influences that veered into Americana, the project’s eponymous debut was released by Hearts & Plugs in 2014. A year later, SUSTO self-released Live from the Australian Country Music Hall of Fame. By the time the group did an Audiotree Live session in August 2016, the lineup consisted of Osborne, guitarist/keyboardist/singers Corey Campbell and Johnny Delaware, bass player Jenna Desmond, and drummer Marshall Hudson. SUSTO’s second studio album, & I'm Fine Today, arrived in January 2017 on Acid Boys/Missing Piece Records. With guitarist Dries Vandenberg having replaced Delaware, the group made their TV debut on CBS This Morning: Saturday and embarked on a tour with the Lumineers the same month.
In early 2018, SUSTO returned with Stories, a collection of stripped-down versions of songs, live recordings, and commentary derived from a web series of the same name. Osborne did a series of solo shows in support of the record. Going forward as a solo project with various collaborators, SUSTO’s third official studio LP, Ever Since I Lost My Mind, marked Osborne’s debut for Rounder Records. Released in early 2019, the album was produced by Ian Fitchuck (Kacey Musgraves, Drew Holcomb) and went on to peak at number ten on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart.
After signing to New West Records, SUSTO re-emerged in mid-2021 with “Get Down,” the lead single from the deeply reflective Time in the Sun LP, which arrived later that October. Two years later, the band issued My Entire Life, another set of of warm, inward-looking songs, and their second outing for New West. ~ Marcy Donelson
