Somni

Based out of Los Angeles, Somni is the work of electronic musician and producer Leo Shulman, whose vibrant pastiche of melodies, beats, samples, and interesting sounds manifested itself on his 2018 full-length debut, Bloom. Born in England, Shulman came from a musical family who relocated to the U.S. when he was eight years old. After studying jazz and the New School in New York, he migrated to Los Angeles, where he became immersed in the beats of hip-hop and electronic music. Under the name ALEOS, Shulman released the Monuments EP in 2013, introducing listeners to his sample-heavy, experimental glitch-hop style. Over the next four years, he continued to develop and refine his approach, re-emerging in early 2018 on the Friends of Friends label as Somni. His first single for the label, “Overgrown,” was a collaboration with fellow West Coast producer Nabeyin. Somni’s full-length debut, Bloom, was released in August of that year. ~ Timothy Monger
