About this artist

Russian-born, Berlin-based artist Perila creates experimental ambient music which serves as a sonic diary, incorporating field recordings, spoken poetry, ASMR-like whispers, and ethereal singing. She’s released numerous recordings on her own, including 2021′s How Much Time It Is Between You and Me?, in addition to projects with electronic artists like Huerco S. and Ulla Straus. She is also active as a radio host, podcaster, curator, performer, photographer, and illustrator.
Aleksandra Zakharenko grew up in St. Petersburg, where she drummed and sang in various local bands. She co-founded radio.syg.ma, one of Russia’s first online radio stations devoted to experimental sounds. She moved to Berlin around 2015 and started hosting a program on Berlin Community Radio under the name Perila. By 2019, she was using the moniker for her recordings, and her debut LP, Irer Dent, a mixture of ambient textures and spoken word based on her WET (Weird Erotic Tension) podcast, was released by Sferic. Several limited cassettes and digital releases followed, including Air/Leather on the Trilogy Tapes and 2020′s Everything Is Already There on Boomkat Editions (later issued on LP). She also released several recordings with Ulla Straus (aka Ulla), and contributed to the self-titled record by Critical Amnesia, a breakbeat techno supergroup including Huerco S., Exael, and Vtgnike among its members. How Much Time It Is Between You and Me?, described as an album of hauntological musique concrète, was released by Smalltown Supersound in 2021. ~ Paul Simpson
