His works include operas, orchestral, and chamber music, including a large number of songs. His style is similar to that of his teacher Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, with the exception of his orchestral suite "Caucasian Sketches" (Kavkazskiye Eskizi, written in 1894). He was named as a "People's Artist of the USSR" in 1922 and also awarded the "Order of the Red Banner of Labour".
