The breezy folk-pop sounds of Philadelphia duo Lullanas are conjured by twin sisters Atisha and Nishita Lulla, whose independently released single, “Don’t Say,” earned them over a million streams in the late 2010s as well as a contract with Nettwerk Music Group. The label issued their first EP, Before Everything Got Real, in 2020.
Although the two sisters were enamored of music and began singing at a young age, they didn’t begin performing together until their college years. Nishita began learning to play the guitar her father had given her just before college and soon she and Atisha began writing their first songs together. They’d already been gigging around New York when, during a trip to visit their grandmother in India, they recorded the sweetly uplifting indie folk song “Don’t Say.” Released in 2016 with little fanfare under the name Lullanas, the single took on a life of its own, eventually notching a million streams. Their appealing mix of Americana, indie folk, country, and pop helped them land a deal with the Nettwerk label who paired the sisters with producer Peter Katis (the National). Released in early 2020, their first two singles for the label, “Memphis” and “Highway Honey,” were wistful and romantic with a laid-back folk-pop tone; both songs later appeared on their debut EP, Before Everything Got Real. ~ Timothy Monger
