Lorenzo Ghielmi

About this artist

An active harpsichordist, organist, and musicologist, Lorenzo Ghielmi wears many hats as a recitalist, scholar, and founder and director of the early music ensemble La Divina Armonia. An authority on the works of Girolamo Frescobaldi and Milanese composers of the 16th and 17th centuries, Ghielmi has also pursued research into Baroque organ building and written scholarly studies on the music of the era. Ghielmi was the organist at the Basilica di San Simpliciano in Milan, and from 1992 to 1994 he played a series of recitals devoted to the complete organ music of Johann Sebastian Bach. He has taught at several institutions, including the Accademia Internazionale della Musica in Milan and the Hoschule für Musik in Lübeck, and additionally given lectures and master classes around the world. Ghielmi plays the harpsichord in duets with his brother, Vittorio Ghielmi, who plays the viola da gamba. In 2018, Ghielmi released Frescobaldi: Organ Works and Motets on Passacaille, featuring the voices of La Divina Armonia, as well as solo performances on the Antegnati organ in Peglio. ~ Blair Sanderson
