Making textured indie rock with a reflective tone, Kississippi is the project of Philadelphia singer/songwriter Zoë Reynolds. Its first full-length release, Sunset Blush, appeared in 2018. Reynolds incorporated synths on the more polished Mood Ring in 2021.
Initially a duo, Kississippi made its debut in 2014 with the sparsely appointed I Can Feel You in My Hair Still, a spectral folk EP Reynolds recorded in her mother’s laundry room with Colin James Kupson, whom she had met on a dating app. The following year, they produced the more elaborate follow-up EP We Have No Future, We’re All Doomed for New Jersey-based Soft Speak Records. The duo parted ways in 2016, leaving Reynolds to reconfigure Kississippi as a full electric band of which she was the captain. Her affinity for emo-inspired pop made her a strong fit for the SideOneDummy label, which signed her in 2017. By the time she’d finished the band’s debut full-length, however, a restructuring within the label ultimately resulted in Kississippi self-releasing Sunset Blush in April 2018. U.K. label Alcopop! handled the release across the Atlantic.
The project signed with Triple Crown Records in 2020, and they issued next album Mood Ring the following August. Produced primarily by Andy Park (Pedro the Lion, Meg Myers), the record’s many contributors included Bartees Strange and Deep Sea Diver’s Jessica Dobson. ~ Timothy Monger & Marcy Donelson
