Jonathan Hope is quickly gaining a reputation at home and abroad as one of the most dynamic young performers of his generation.
Educated at George Abbot School in his hometown of Guildford, Surrey, he studied initially with Stephen Lacey, John Belcher and David Sanger, and then at the Royal College of Music, London (2007-2011) with Margaret Phillips and Sophie-Véronique Cauchefer-Choplin (improvisation).
Increasingly in demand as a recitalist, Jonathan’s career to date has taken him throughout the UK, as well as France, Germany, Italy, the USA and Australia. Recently, he has performed solo recitals at Canterbury Cathedral, Westminster Cathedral, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Saint-Sulpice, Paris.
In March 2014, Jonathan took up the post of Assistant Director of Music at Gloucester Cathedral, where he is the principal organist for the cathedral services, accompanist to the Gloucester Choral Society, and Director of the Saint Cecilia Singers.
Jonathan was Organ Scholar of the world-famous Winchester Cathedral (2012-2014) where he worked with the choir, played for the daily services, was responsible for training the chorister probationers, and was accompanist to the cathedral’s two voluntary choirs. At Winchester, Jonathan also played for the funeral of the composer Sir John Tavener, and in a concert featuring Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
Previously, Jonathan was Organ Scholar of Southwark Cathedral (2010-2012), where his duties involved accompanying and directing the cathedral choirs in daily services, and serving as Acting Sub-Organist & Director of the Girls’ Choir in his final term, a term which included prestigious services for the 2012 London Olympics and HM The Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
Through his involvement in the annual Three Choirs Festival, he has played with the Philharmonia Orchestra and worked with soloists including John Mark Ainsley and Brindley Sherratt. He has appeared in various capacities at St. John’s, Smith Square and in the Queen Elizabeth Hall (Southbank Centre, London). Jonathan has also performed as part of the City of London Festival. Recently, he has played in performances of Bach’s St. John Passion, Mozart’s Mass in C minor, Elgar’s The Apostles, Duruflé's Requiem and Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. As an accompanist, he has broadcast live on both BBC Radio 3 and 4.
An increasingly influential organ teacher, Jonathan has held organ teaching positions at the City of London School and Sevenoaks School, and teaches a fast-growing number of private pupils.
