Florida’s flipturn deal in a hook-heavy indie rock that’s lush, driving, and passionate. Following a series of studio EPs recorded while building a fan base with their live shows in the latter half of the 2010s, they made their full-length debut with Shadowglow in 2022.
Named for a swimming maneuver, flipturn was founded by teenagers Dillon Basse (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), and Madeline Jarman (bass) in Fernandina Beach, Florida, in 2015. They self-released their first EP, Heavy Colors, in 2017, following it a year later with Citrona. They were headlining national tours by the time they released their third EP, 2020′s Something You Needed, with drummer Adrian Walker.
With their full-length debut, flipturn settled into the lineup of Basse, Duncan, Jarman, Mitch Fountain (synth/guitar), and Devon VonBalson (drums). Produced by Jon Gilbert (Mt. Joy, Adam Melchor), Shadowglow arrived on Nashville-based Dualtone Records in August 2022. That year, flipturn performed at such high-profile festivals as Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. ~ Marcy Donelson
