Florida’s flipturn deal in a hook-heavy indie rock that’s lush, driving, and passionate. Following a series of studio EPs recorded while building a fan base with their live shows in the latter half of the 2010s, they made their full-length debut with Shadowglow in 2022. A handful of appearances at marquee U.S. festivals preceded the arrival of the follow-up, 2024′s Burnout Days. Named for a swimming maneuver, flipturn was founded by teenagers Dillon Basse (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), and Madeline Jarman (bass) in Fernandina Beach, Florida, in 2015. They self-released their first EP, Heavy Colors, in 2017, following it a year later with Citrona. They were headlining national tours by the time they released their third EP, 2020′s Something You Needed, with drummer Adrian Walker. With their full-length debut, flipturn settled into the lineup of Basse, Duncan, Jarman, Mitch Fountain (synth/guitar), and Devon VonBalson (drums). Produced by Jon Gilbert (Mt. Joy, Adam Melchor), Shadowglow arrived on Nashville-based Dualtone Records in August 2022. That year, flipturn performed at such high-profile festivals as Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. A deluxe version of Shadowglow featuring live takes and more appeared in mid-2023. In between tours, the band recorded their second LP at Texas’ Sonic Ranch Studios, outside of El Paso, with producer Chad Copelin (Colony House, Sasha Alex Sloan). They previewed the resulting Burnout Days in September 2024 with the self-examining lead single “Rodeo Clown.” The album followed on Dualtone in January 2025. ~ Marcy Donelson
