A moody and stylish pop singer/songwriter, FLETCHER often draws upon her strong, queer point of view to craft her rock- and electronic-tinged anthems. She first gained attention for “War Paint,” a digital single that went viral in the summer of 2015, before debuting on the Billboard pop genre charts in 2019 with “Undrunk” off her You Ruined New York City for Me EP. A second EP, The S(ex) Tapes, arrived in August 2020 and hit number 11 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart. In 2022, FLETCHER cracked the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 with her debut album, Girl of My Dreams. She returned in 2024 with her sophomore album, In Search of the Antidote. Born Cari Elise Fletcher in Asbury Park, New Jersey, on March 19, 1994, the singer/songwriter fell in love with music as a child, taking vocal lessons when she was five years old. Upon graduating from high school, her first big break in the music industry arrived when she competed on the premiere season of the American version of The X Factor in 2011, performing as a member of the group Lakoda Rayne. Later, she enrolled at the Clive Davis Institute at New York University. After a year-and-a-half of study, she took a leave of absence to move to Nashville to collaborate with producer/songwriter Jamie Kenney. With an EP finished, she headed back to school, during which time the single “War Paint” went viral in 2015, racking up millions of plays on streaming services. She capitalized on its success by releasing the Finding Fletcher EP in 2016. Over the next two years, FLETCHER continued to focus on singles, releasing “You Should Talk” in late 2017, followed a year later by “I Believe You,” a song inspired by the #MeToo movement. In January 2019, she returned with “Undrunk.” Featuring production by Malay (Frank Ocean, Lorde), the single landed in the Top 20 of Billboard’s Pop Songs and Mainstream Top 40 charts, and appeared on that year’s You Ruined New York City for Me EP. She followed that with the seven-track The S(ex) Tapes in August 2020. It reached number 11 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart. The song “She Said” arrived in 2021 as part of the soundtrack to season two of the Hulu drama Love, Victor. Several more stand-alone singles arrived throughout the year including “Girls, Girls, Girls” and the Hayley Kiyoko collaboration “Cherry.” In September 2022, she delivered her debut album, Girl of My Dreams, which featured executive production by Malay, along with production and songwriting contributions by Jennifer Decilveo, and others. The title track, as well as singles like “Her Body Is Bible,” “Becky’s So Hot,” and “Sting,” found FLETCHER reflecting on past relationships and embracing her identity as a queer person who grew up in a small conservative community. The album reached number 15 on the Billboard 200. Several singles followed, including “Suckerpunch (as part of the deluxe version of Girl of My Dreams), and “Silent Night.” In 2023, she teased her sophomore album with the emotive single “Eras of Us.” The tracks “Lead Me On” and “Doing Better” followed in early 2024, before the full-length, In Search of the Antidote, was issued in March. ~ Matt Collar & Stephen Thomas Erlewine
