British singer/songwriter and vlogger Dodie rose to fame with both her bittersweet acoustic songs and her creative online activity. After issuing her debut EP, Intertwined, in 2016, her songs took a softer, more melancholy turn on releases like 2019′s Human EP. It reached the U.K.’s Top Five. Dodie’s first long-player, Build a Problem, arrived in 2021 and landed in the Top Three. She followed it with the EP Hot Mess in 2022.
Epping, Essex native Dorothy Miranda Clark first became widely known during her late teens for documenting her life on social media, expressing herself artistically through acting and performing. A big part of this was her songwriting, which led to Clark — nicknamed Dodie — becoming associated with her use of the baritone ukulele and original songs about love, loss, and yearning. She quickly became an online sensation and in 2016 started work on her debut EP, Intertwined. Self-released that November as her popularity continued to rise, it cracked the Top 40 in the U.K. and Ireland, leading to live performances around the country. The songwriter ultimately landed a spot on the Transatlantic Tour, which found her performing in the U.S. alongside fellow social media stars Jon “Paint” Cozart, Rusty Clanton, and Tess Violet.
In 2017, Dodie returned with her second EP, You. It revealed a more tender and somber sound palette than its predecessor, including resonant violas, introspective lyrics, and melancholy piano. The characteristics connected with listeners, and You reached the Top Five in Ireland, number six in the U.K., and number 17 in Australia. Dodie’s sound continued to develop over the next two years with the release of softer, more introspective singles like “Human” and “If I’m Being Honest,” both of which appeared on her 2019 EP Human. The set peaked at number five on the U.K. album chart.
Recorded with producer Joe Rubel (Ed Sheeran, Maisie Peters) and Pomplamoose, Dodie’s full-length debut, Build a Problem, arrived in March 2021 and debuted at number three in the U.K. A culmination of almost a decade of writing music, it featured 14 original songs, including “Boys Like You,” which cracked the Top 100 in Scotland. To support the release, Dodie returned to her daily vlog after a five-month hiatus. A little over a year later, she returned with the song “Got Weird,” which was included on the EP Hot Mess in September of 2022. It was co-produced by Dodie and Peter Miles (Torres, Dry the River). ~ Rob Wacey & Marcy Donelson
