Franklin, Tennessee’s Colony House make driving, often uplifting guitar-based rock. This heartfelt rock sound often finds the band working in surf and retro-lounge influences, and several of their tracks have broken through to become multi-million streaming underground anthems. Colony House went deeper into surf elements on 2023′s nostalgic and personal album The Cannonballers.
Formed in 2009, Colony House began as a trio with singer/guitarist Caleb Chapman and drummer Will Chapman (sons of CCM singer/songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman) and guitarist Scott Mills. Calling themselves Caleb, they forged a bright indie rock sound influenced by alt-rock legends like U2, as well as more contemporary influences like Cold War Kids. In 2013, they changed their handle to Colony House, borrowing the name from an apartment complex in their home of Franklin, Tennessee, where all three musicians had lived at one time or another. Colony House self-released three EPs before the 2014 arrival of their debut full-length, When I Was Younger. They toured heavily during 2015, and expanded to a four-piece with Parke Cottrell on bass.
In 2017, Colony House returned with their sophomore full-length, Only the Lonely. The album featured several notable singles, but it was their cheery and motivational song “You Know It” that would be a viral success, catching on across various social media platforms and eventually accruing over 75 million streams. Third album Leave What’s Lost Behind arrived in 2020, as did the Colony House-centered concert film Everybody Is Looking for Some Light. The next year, the band released the live album Colony House Live, Vol. 1 and also the Rotten Tomatoes EP, which featured a guest appearance from Fleurie on the song “Automatic.” Fourth album The Cannonballers arrived in February 2023, and the group delved deeper into surf guitars, sunny melodies, and thoughtfully nostalgic lyrics. ~ Fred Thomas
