Chrome Sparks is an indie electronic project helmed by Brooklyn-based Jeremy Malvin, who began producing music under the name while attending college in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His songs blend playfully manipulated samples and vocals, and are equally primed for dance parties as well as chilling out. Through word of mouth and extensive blog coverage, he’s built up an extensive fan base, and frequently tours as both a DJ and with a live band, sharing the stage with Shigeto, ODESZA, Cyril Hahn, and many others. Born in Pittsburgh, Malvin moved to Ann Arbor and studied percussion at the University of Michigan. He began to DJ at house parties and local clubs, in addition to playing drums in Stepdad and Miniature Tigers. He started releasing electronic tracks as Chrome Sparks in 2010, uploading his debut single “Wait for Heartbeats” to Bandcamp that year, and the EP My <3 the year after. His 2012 single “Marijuana” became a huge hit online, and appeared on Kitsuné Music’s compilation Kitsuné America, Vol. 2 the following year, as well as Malvin’s Sparks EP, which was initially another digital self-release. After relocating to Brooklyn, Chrome Sparks signed to Australian label Future Classic, which re-released the EP at the end of 2013, and issued Goddess in the spring of 2014. In late 2015, after remixing songs by Porter Robinson and the Glitch Mob and continuing to tour extensively, Chrome Sparks’ third EP for Future Classic, Parallelism, was released. Containing longer, more dancefloor-friendly songs than previous releases, the EP’s leadoff track, “Moonraker,” spawned a remix EP featuring reworks by Lauer and another artist formerly based in Ann Arbor, Pascäal. In 2016, Chrome Sparks was signed to Ninja Tune-affiliated Counter Records. “All or Nothing,” featuring Angelica Bess of Body Language, was released that year, followed by “Wake” in 2017. Debut full-length Chrome Sparks appeared in April of 2018, featuring an additional collaboration with Bess (“What’s It Gonna Take”) as well as guest appearances from Kllo and Graham Ulicny (Reptar). Chrome Sparks toured with Machinedrum in support of the album. Malvin kicked off 2019 with the release of Chrome Sparks’ EP Be on Fire. ~ Paul Simpson
