Bristol-based techno DJ/producer Larry McCarthy (aka Bruce) navigates the space between club-ready tracks and forward-thinking production. Although initially inspired by the mid- to late-wave of dubstep, by the time McCarthy began producing for himself he pursued a sound more aligned with post-dubstep. His sound quickly progressed to the intersection of techno and bass music, leading to his debut album, 2018′s Sonder Somatic, which encapsulated McCarthy’s style of oddly structured club bangers. Born in Chesham, on the outskirts of London, McCarthy grew up on a diet of rock and punk, going as far as to learn drums and play in various bands. He was first exposed to dance music through the likes of Caspa, Rusko, Andy C, Benga, and Skream, when they would perform at underage nights in London. It wasn’t long before he turned his hand to producing his own tracks, choosing post-dubstep as a launching point. His sound progressed further into the realms of techno after studying Creative Music Technology at Bath Spa University, on a course with alumni including Addison Groove, Vessel, and Asusu. He finished his studies in 2014, soon after moving to nearby Bristol and releasing his debut EP through Livity Sound’s sister label Dnous Ytivil, aptly titled Just Getting Started. The next three years saw McCarthy tick off EP releases on many of Bristol’s innovative techno labels, including 2014′s Not Stochastic on Hessle Audio, 2016′s The Trouble with Wilderness on Idle Hands, I'm Alright Mate on Timedance, and 2017′s Before You Sleep on Hemlock. For the release of his debut album, 2018′s Sonder Somatic, he came full-circle by releasing it through Hessle Audio. ~ Liam Martin
