About this artist

A versatile singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Boise, Idaho, Trevor Powers began making dreamy, vulnerable neo-psychedelic pop under the moniker Youth Lagoon in 2010. Six years and three albums later, he announced the end of the project and began recording under his own name. His first release as Trevor Powers, an album of fractured, noisy avant-pop titled Mulberry Violence, arrived in 2018. He altered his sound further with 2021′s Capricorn, a short album of haunting electronic instrumentals.
Youth Lagoon was the outlet for Powers’ most personal hopes and fears, which he set to dreamy yet tenacious lo-fi pop. Powers posted his first Youth Lagoon song online in May 2011, sparking a buzz that resulted in a deal with Fat Possum Records. His first album, The Year of Hibernation, dealt with psychological dysphoria and arrived that September. The more expansive Wondrous Bughouse, which drew comparisons to vintage Pink Floyd and the Flaming Lips, and revolved around “the struggle between the physical and the spiritual world,” was released in March 2013. Powers then decamped to England to work with co-producer Ali Chant at Toybox Studios in Bristol. The results became Savage Hills Ballroom, Youth Lagoon’s third studio long-player, which appeared in 2015. On February 1, 2016, Powers officially put the project to rest, stating in an open letter to fans that “I ended Youth Lagoon because it became a mental dungeon, and I was its captive. My intention was never to keep it going — only to serve as a nod to the blooming years.”
In 2018, Powers released Mulberry Violence under his own name, marrying the highly personal fractured pop of his earlier work with a more experimental and electronics-forward approach. Three years later, he returned with his first collection of all-instrumental music, Capricorn. ~ Heather Phares
