Female R&B quartet Shades features Monique Peoples, Danielle Andrews, Tiffanie Cardwell and Shannon Walker Williams. They formed after meeting at Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, in the early 90s. After signing with Motown Records they released an impressive 1996 single, ‘Tell Me’, before embarking on sessions for a self-titled debut album. This was promoted with the release of a second single, ‘Serenade’, which also made the US R&B charts. The latter featured a looped sample from Spandau Ballet’s ‘True’ (previously employed by PM Dawn on ‘Set Adrift On Memory Bliss’), and was also issued in a Spanish-language version in an attempt to broaden the group’s appeal.
