Philadelphia-based DJ and producer Amorphous first received viral attention for his inventive mash-ups of other artists’ hits. Unlikely pairings of familiar songs slowly drew more and more attention until Amorphous was collaborating with established artists like dvsn and Fat Joe, as well as working on new compositions of his own. His first EP of original material came with 2021′s Things Take Shape.
Amorphous was born Jimir Reece Davis and grew up in a musical household in Philadelphia. By his teenage years he became interested in music production as a means of personal expression and as an exercise, he often put together mash-ups of the hip-hop and R&B tracks he’d heard while growing up. In 2017, his mash-up of Rihanna’s “Work” with Aaliyah’s “Rock the Boat,” gained serious attention online, and pushed the producer to create more tracks like it. Over the next several years, Amorphous honed his craft with mash-ups, many of which went viral. His viral fame crested around 2020, when his smart and infectious mash-ups had caught the attention of not just millions of listeners, but stars like LL Cool J, Issa Rae, John Legend, and Oprah Winfrey, who gifted him with a new laptop to replace the old one he’d been making his tracks on. In late 2020, he released a mash-up of Luther Vandross’ “Never Too Much” and Rihanna’s “Kiss It Better,” unofficially titled “Sunshine.” The song caught on so wildly that Fat Joe and DJ Khaled reached out to Amorphous to release an official commercial version of the song. “Sunshine (The Light)” was released the next year and paved the way for Amorphous’ first widely released EP, Things Take Shape. The six-song EP was released in July of 2021 and featured appearances from Bree Runway, CeCe Peniston, RAYE,and others. ~ Fred Thomas
